As we wrap up another year, it’s the perfect time to pause, reflect, and plan—especially when it comes to something as essential as your hand instruments. If there’s one thing I know for certain, it’s that having the right tools makes all the difference.

Now is the ideal time to organize your annual budget for 2025. What instruments will you need to work efficiently, effectively, and safely in the year ahead? Whether you are fortunate enough to order what you need, when you need it, or you are navigating budget constraints, having a proactive plan in place is key.

How to Get Started:

1. Assess Your Current Kits

Take an inventory of your instruments. Which ones are nearing the end of their lifespan? Which kits need to be upgraded or replaced? You can always start flagging kits:

  • Green: In good shape
  • Yellow: Some wear
  • Red: Time to Retire and Replace!

To make this process easier, I’ve included an Instrument Inventory Log below to help you get started.

2. Anticipate Your Needs

Look ahead to the type of procedures and volume you will be handling. Do you have the right tools to match your workload? You can use the Decision Tree for Instrument Selection as a baseline to identify what you need regardless of what brand of instruments you use. These Decision Trees are based using LM Dental Instruments. You can find more information about LM instruments on the Curion Website. I have also included an Instrumentation Worksheet so you can start creating or optimizing your own instrument kits.

3. Make Your Proposal

Whether you are purchasing independently or submitting to a manager, put together a clear, justified proposal for the instruments you will need in 2025. Having a structured approach can make all the difference when seeking approval. Collect your information and set up a meeting to go through your proposal. To help, I’ve included a Proposal Worksheet that you can download and customize for your needs.

A Budget That Works Year After Year

Imagine setting up an annual budget for your instruments once and letting it happen automatically, year after year. That’s the ultimate goal—planning ahead so you are always equipped with the best tools to provide exceptional care.

Start now, take inventory, and set yourself up for success. Don’t wait until you’re struggling with dull or unsafe tools. Be proactive and set yourself—and your patients—up for success.

Let’s make 2025 the year where you work smarter, safer, and with tools that truly support you.
