Lasers are high-tech solutions that provide many benefits in dental hygiene. As services using lasers become more popular, it can benefit you to know how to use these lasers and to offer them at your practice. But how do you go about doing so? If you’re interested in dental hygiene laser training, here’s what you need to know.

What are lasers used for?

Soft tissue diode lasers offer a variety of benefits in dental hygiene. These lasers are typically used for periodontal treatments, to reduce the amount of bacteria present, and to activate the regrowth of tissue. Procedures using soft tissue diode lasers encourage the tissue to heal more quickly. Lasers are also gentler than a scalpel and typically cause very little pain after the procedure, as they seal blood vessels and nerve endings in the process of penetrating the tissue. Soft tissue diode lasers are easy to use and give your patients a high-tech solution to dental care.

What is dental hygiene laser training?

In order to offer soft tissue diode laser services, it’s important to be trained in how the lasers work and how to use them. Laser training teaches how a specific laser can provide care and comfort for the patient, affect treatment outcomes, and serve as an effective complementary treatment to scaling and root planing.

At rdhu, our training includes a theory portion and a hands-on portion. We also discuss the different lasers available, which one to choose based on the needed procedure, an overview of physics, and evidence of the effectiveness of these lasers. Training is available in person as well as online.

What you’ll learn

As an rdhu student, you’ll explore the evidence supporting laser integration into your dental hygiene practice, as well as learn how the diode laser may be introduced into your dental hygiene practice within your scope of practice. You’ll learn about the lasers, the science behind them, and how to use them in your practice to provide improved patient care.

During the course, you’ll also learn how the lasers interact with tissue, the proper settings and safety measures to use while handling the lasers, codes for billing that reflect the services performed, and more. You’ll also become certified in the use of the soft tissue diode laser following the completion of a didactic and clinical training program.

What’s included?

Lessons will be taught using a variety of materials and best practices. These include a course handout, instruction on stripping and cleaving the fiber, hands-on clinical application of bacterial reduction, learning how to set up the lasers, plus a final test and self-assessment at the end. You’ll also receive a certificate of completion.
